“Today I had my first bout of ice pick headaches. After an afternoon of spontaneous, momentary jolts of pain that lasted a few seconds and disappeared as quickly as they came on, it was time to walk the dog. Normally an enjoyable part of my day, I knew my 50-pound pit bull would drag me all over the town so she could kiss everyone she laid eyes on, attempt to eat every morsel of bird seed she could dig up, and generally make me spend as long as possible away from the silent, darkened sanctuary of my migraine-optimized bedroom. What a friendly, adorable, sweet, idiot friend that dog is.
I remembered having seen a trailer for this podcast the day before, and in the fog of mountain climbing equipment caving in my skull, I downloaded the first episode and headed out with my dippy doo dah pupper.
37 minutes in, I was still not sure whether this podcast was a joke. I was familiar with Charlotte and Patrick’s brand from Funhaus, and I genuinely couldn’t figure out if they were summarizing a History Channel show I’d never seen as a joke, or were actually morbidly fascinated by maritime disasters. I’m still not entirely sure, but I know that I got through a walk with my overly social dog during an avalanche of unpredictable cranial pain, and even laughed a few times.
This podcast is a delightful, worrying spot of frightening weirdness, and while I’m concerned that I hallucinated the whole experience of listening to it while walking my dog who may or may not exist in the midst of a migraine delirium, I know that I immediately Googled the Eastland disaster when I got home, so at a minimum I learned something new.”
