“I've just finished listening to the interview with Mike McCrea, and was soooo thrilled to hear the dulcet tones of "another great, but rarely heard (on Northern American podcasts), antipodean-accented science communicator,"
You wouldn't know they were in different rooms (let alone- {half way around the world} from one another, until they mentioned it "off the bat"), such is Derek's skill as an interviewer & communicator himself.
I'm ashamed to say that I haven't read Mike's book, but, will be off to Embiggen Books to get a copy ASAP. He, along with Neil deGrasse Tyson (Ep #179 last week), have given me a totally new outlook on my own perspective as a Science Educator.
I can't recommend this podcast highly enough. It's NOT a place where the 'Choir' are 'Preached to'. It's more a reminder to ALWAYS remain vigilant against 'WOO', & think about how we can all be skeptical in everyday life. It's where the world's best in critical thinking go to share their thoughts, hopes, plans & ideas for a brighter future, because they have been taught to think critically, and question EVERYTHING... And, who doesn't want that?
Sidebar- We all saw what happened, just a few years ago, when for eight years, a country proclaiming to be "the greatest in the world", DIDN'T elect a man- who was bereft of both Scientific Literacy and any reasonable command of the English language, - who went on to be known as "The leader of the Free World". It was terrifying then, and IS now, b/c it could happen again. It COULD also happen in Australia... Skepticality is an antidote to situations like this. Science IS everywhere & EFFECTS everything. Critical Thinking and Skepticism are tools that everyone should use everyday. N.B: This is MY OWN opinion. The Podcast is in NO WAY Political...
Listen, & tell two people! I'll be sure to use it in the classroom; as homework, listening & comprehension exercises, research. The ways this fantastically made, beautifully researched & executed podcast can be used 'For Good' are limited only by your imagination. And again, Skepticality is NOT just for educators, either... Everyone can benefit from a '... Little Skepticality (and Science)'. Thankyou!”
