“July 2023:One host tries to explain what he loves about the Tom Waits style; the other mainly carps and virtue signals. Creates an interesting tension. The quality of guests’ contribution varies but the regular changeovers at least keep it fresh. Main benefit for me has been to take time and pay much more attention to each individual song. They deserve five stars simply because of the dogged persistence which has got them so far. A brilliant idea to which they’ve been faithful for years.
September 2023: Actually… having got as far as Swordfishtrombones with the lads by now, I’ve warmed considerably to their style of presenting. They express a lot of genuine admiration for Mr Waits and real insight into how he writes and performs his songs. I admit, I wrote my less than generous comments in July in haste.
Also, some of their guests are really well chosen and could do a Tom Waits podcast with at least equal knowledge and aplomb.
Rather than rewrite the first paragraph I’ll leave it to stand as a reminder that one should give a show a good chance before expressing an opinion.”
