“I like the format and structure of this podcast. The analysis is good and they strike the right mix of qualitative assessments with advanced stats to understand and explain what’s happening with the team. Jim Margalus is great and always has thoughtful insights to break down the current issues the Sox are facing.
However…I find Josh Nelson pretty hard to listen to. His analysis is good, but he has some speaking mannerisms that are truly grating. He almost always says the full name of the team including the city, and frequently adds the year, so that the phrase “two thousand and twenty three Chicago White Sox” is spoken many times per episode, often multiple times in the same sentence. No normal fan talks that way – just say “the White Sox” or “this year’s team” or something! It’s a White Sox podcast and it’s obvious from the context that you’re talking about the current team. If you say “the Sox” instead of “two thousand and twenty three Chicago White Sox” no one is going to think you’re talking about the 1986 Red Sox.
Similarly, he almost always says the full name of the players “Lucas Giolito” or “Luis Robert Jr.” instead of just the last name or even just saying “him”. It’s a weirdly formal way of speaking, and I find it distracting and really off-putting. The recent trade episodes were an example of how this is especially painful as he continues to say “Chicago White Sox” and “Los Angeles Angels” and “Lucas Giolito” throughout the episode.”
