“I don’t think it was because we lost the engineers or the engineering prowess. Of course, many of them were given their pink slips, but it was more that the industrial CAPABILITY and the means to production were systematically dismantled. Budget was a part of that decision for sure, but it was more political than just money. We can thank Senator William Proxmire for the thought-leadership for that kind of decision. It wasn’t just canceling the final lunar landings, it was almost “let’s ensure we don’t do it again.”
