Dr Elizabeth Fernandez 's Women in Science
The podcast captures the essence of the remarkable life of Ruby Payne-Scott, the first woman radio astronomer (from 1944). I have worked on the life of Payne-Scott for the last 20 years, publishing two books "Under the Radar - the First Woman in Radio Astronomy: Ruby Payne-Scott" from 2009 (Springer, co-author the the late Richard McGee) followed by a popular book "Making Waves, The Story of Ruby Payne-Scott: Australian Pioneer Radio Astronomer" from 2013 (Springer, The Astronomers' Universe Series). Dr. Fernandez has done a remarkable job in summarizing her life in this half hour interview. She has covered in a thorough fashion the high lights of the life of remarkable individual. Payne-Scott's scientific achievements are covered as well as her trials of being a women in the Australian workplace in the late 1930s to 1951. Fortunately, her story is now well known in Australia where a number of awards and lectureships have been named after her in the last decade.
