You need to listen to this!!!
Connie Walker is a truly amazing storyteller. Her work touches my soul every time I experience it, and connects me to the story so that I am feeling every word, not just hearing it. Stolen, like the rest of her work, should be required learning for every Canadian. The vulnerability Connie and her family have in sharing their experiences is so authentic. It’s painful to hear, as it should be, but the snapshots of their personalities and every-day lives in between- laughing, talking about gardens, catching up - truly centre & ground the listener in the story. I am not Indigenous. I was, however, born and raised on the territory of the Kwakwaka’wakw people, and my step-mother was a Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations member. Her experience at Residential School and what was done to her there, and her family with/before her, has had life-long, intergenerational impacts on my siblings, nieces & nephews. Storytelling like this is so integral for the healing process - “it’s necessary to know why people are the way they are” I’m only 3 episodes in now and haven’t been able to stop listening. It’s such an emotional & heartbreaking listen - and also what has stood out to me the most is resilience & growth of the survivors. Knowing what Connie has accomplished, listening to her uncles and step-mother talk about their growth, her fathers growth - it speaks to something so much stronger than all the deliberately perpetrated horrors. And there is something truly beautiful in that that needs to be honoured. Gilakas’la

This is an Astonishing podcast. It was/is a privilege to experience. I honour the valiant people who told the story of what happened to them at St. Michaels, Kamloops and other horrible residential schools. Stolen is a beautifully crafted podcast from the editing, to the music to the cover art. ...Read full review »

Connie Walker has a way of relating to and reporting on the people she interviews that brings an incredibly high level of humanity to all of her podcasts. She is a powerful advocate for all of the MMIW.
