Explains Rocketjump
This show is an interesting look at the writing process, warts and all. While the guys do occasionally come up with a great take on a story (Clippy and Jar-Jar), it also shows the dangers of collaborative creation. One writer will have a great idea, and the others will cut it off; similarly, one writer will have an absolutely awful idea and foist it upon the others through sheer force of personality and stubborness (Matt in Fast and the Furious). Seriously? Aliens in the Fast series makes more sense than a government conspiracy involving the moon landings? For longtime fans of Freddiew, I think it also helps show why Rocketjump has become what it has become today. Freddiew speaks the least, but has probably the best sense for the quick-hitting and well-timed gag or setup. Will is obsessed with jamming whatever story is conceived into a five act story structure and talking over everyone. Matt can never make up his mind whether he wants to be artistic or funny, and the result ends up a muddled mess. Also constant Seth Rogan giggles. Rocketjump was best when making short, quick pieces that knew if the central conceit was humor or great action. While they certainly mixed, each short had a core identity. The shows Rocketjump has come out with since the end of Video Game High School have essentially had a problem of identity. They want to be taken seriously but also make stupid jokes. The podcast shows these problems come from the writing room. Pretty decent podcast, will listen to occasionally.

My goal is to end up in one myself soon, and I’m finding myself going off on my own tangents while I take the bus or work on some other projects. It helps a lot that they’re so got deng...Read full review »
