“I am someone who came very close to becoming one of the children on this podcast. I may have survived, but I will always wear the scars.
I feel that any media reminding people of abuse and the failure of our society to protect its children is deeply important, but this is a subject that needs to be dealt with with the utmost gravity and respect. Unfortunately, the presenter still has much to learn about appropriate behavior and presentation around these subjects and the podcast and blog suffer the worse for it.
The intro is *incredibly* inappropriate; I have to skip it every time, but the continued use of the theme makes me grit my teeth. Seriously, would it have been too hard to google something as simple as “sad piano music” and left it at that? This is ugly and “kitschy”, something that has no place in the discussion of abuse.
Furthermore, the presenter’s interjections of anger and appellations are deeply inappropriate; it is performative and unnecessary, and refocuses the presentation of facts on the *presenter* and her anger, her performance of her fury. It is utterly disrespectful to the victims and their suffering. I understand the anger more than anyone, but focus needs to remain on the victims.
Lastly, this person is apparently selling merchandise and promoting it on this podcast. There is nothing okay about that, absolutely nothing. Under no circumstances should merchandise relating to child abuse ever be created or sold. I understand and applaud the creation of a patreon to fund the creation of the podcast, but merchandise comes much too close to profiting off these childrens’ deaths. That needs to stop immediately.
I want so badly to support this woman and her stated goal of “giving a voice” to these children, but she seems to have attempted this without having spoken to any victims or victims advocates whatsoever about appropriateness and still has too much to learn. It is not unlike a white person trying to “give a voice” to black people, while stumbling and floundering around and blindly being mildly racist the whole way. I hope she can learn and grow and become a better advocate in the future.”
