My “Low” in the High Low segment
My “Low” here is the obvious show of the power dynamic between Geist and his female co- hosts which is billboarded in the seating arrangement where Geist, who is already a very tall, very large man is seated to the side & very much to the front of his female co-host, who is off to the side & noticably behind him, as well as below him, already much smaller than he is ( and implied, much less important than he iis). This seating arrangement seems very male-ego-driven and meant to signify to all just exactly who is in the driver’s seat. Geist’s appeal is his nice-guy image, easy going, a family man, brotherly/good friend kind of guy, as in his pairings with Jenna Bush Hager, sitting in for Hoda, a renaissance man, totally cool with male-female equality. But, in this image, you can almost smell the rush of testosterone and feel the deep need to be seen as “The Man”, The Big Guy, Mr.Big, a somewhat Trumpian need to be seen as King, and a similar loud shout of “Look Daddy, I’m Here, good as you, heading for surpassing you, I win!”. Not a good look for NBC & the Today Show’s reliance and success built on the very professional, capable, talented and relatability of its’ female hosts who have proven themselves, finally, as most valuable to the network despite being underpaid. I’ve been a daily viewer of the Today Show for many years and this is the first time I have written in to any media corporation, but this situation really irks me, given the time and place we are now in, like a slide back into the ‘50’s. Yours truly, Sharon Thomas.
