Description
Our Guest is a trailblazer in the surfing world. On March 2022, Sasha Jane Lowerson placed ninth in the Noosa Festival of Surfing, becoming the first trans woman to compete in surfing at the professional level. Two months later, she placed first in the Open Women's and Women's Logger divisions at the Western Australian State Titles. This win garnered her a lot of attention and has provoked the surfing world to have the conversation about the inclusion of trans athletes in the world of professional surfing. On February 3 of this year, the World Surf League (WSL) announced a new policy allowing trans women to compete in its women’s category if they prove their testosterone levels fall within a defined range. While this announcement was originally released somewhat quietly, the following days Bethany Hamilton then went to social media to protest this decision and boycott all WSL events. On Swell Season, we tried to have a thoughtful conversation with our friends at Benny’s Club and try to sift through the mountain of misinformation that is out there. Our conversation inevitably drifted towards Sasha and all the incredible work she has done. The conversation got her attention and we wanted to allow her to speak on her behalf and also get to know her more. Sasha is our guest on this episode of the Swell Season Surf Podcast.
