“This review only concerns Ethersea. Balance and Amnesty were excellent, and I didn’t finish Graduation.
The McElroy Brothers (and Father) deliver such an interesting and satisfying product, and I truly love this work, so forgive me if I lead with my criticism: Travis really needs to loosen up.
Clint and Justin seem very in line with Griffin’s tone and pace, but every time the ball is passed to Travis, in typical fashion, he holds onto it far longer than he should. He comes off as trying to wedge himself in as the emotional center of the show, taking it far too seriously and refusing to “Yes, and” with his fellow cast. I stopped listening to Graduation as the Middlest Brother forced his players along a singular path, and it’s almost more frustrating seeing the rest of them have to turn to his keel even as Griffin tries to lead the game.
Travis aside, Clint and Justin have created fun, faceted characters, guided along by a rich and deep (pun intended) underwater world developed by Griffin following their group intro. Clint takes a backseat more often than not, but I imagine it must be hard to fit into the ever growing podcast dynamic by the brothers McElroy.
All in all, VERY worth listening to, but I’d be lying if I said I even slightly enjoyed the moments focused on Travis’s Devo. If only we all thought he was as interesting as he thinks he is.”
