Dr. Finch’s historical revisionism
Listened to the 4/29 podcast thinking it was an academic review of the Netflix documentary on cleopatra - not exactly the case. Unfortunately, dr. Charles finch is peddling the same old historical revisionism as jada smith and the fringe academics featured in her documentary. It’s pretty clear that cleopatra was not just greek/Macedonian, but horrifically inbred as well. While there’s an outlier chance maybe her mother had been Egyptian, that would certainly have been an odd move for monarchs so incredibly obsessed with keeping their bloodline “pure” that they consistently married their own siblings. Honestly, I think the fault lies with jada smith for bypassing the opportunity to highlight a lesser known indisputably black African queen, and instead, deciding to spend 4 hours trying to convince viewers a Greek colonizer could have been mixed race. Why folks like dr. Finch choose to make the same self defeating argument as a B list actress defies comprehension. Oh well.
