Episode 276: Just Keep Swimming with Slade Ham
It was New Year’s Eve. A generic poster advertises comedy and music at 8. It’s 7:40. It’s quiet. Stand-up comedian Slade Ham gets handed the mic from a mysterious showrunner. The curtain goes up at 8, and he sees 500 empty seats except for a dead old woman with an oxygen tank and a guy still vacuuming the room.
If a comic performs a set in an empty room, did it really happen? According to Ham, it did, and he’s got a paycheck to prove it. Houston-based comic Slade Ham and Stand up Comic Dan Bublitz Jr share many pearls for comics: why it’s good to produce shows, staying with your plan, tips for different technologies that save time on promotional materials, focusing your effort on building a body of work before releasing video and audio, and how Slade fought through Covid. Plus more!

Slade Ham
Hailing from Houston and averaging more than 200 shows a year, Slade has performed in 58 countries on six continents over the last two decades. He has also taken his show overseas to the United States military twice a year since 2009. His real passions lie on the road, however – traveling the world and collecting stories. He has free-climbed mountains and has been swimming with sharks. He’s wrestled a cheetah and swooped through Turkish valleys in Blackhawk helicopters. He’s wandered Australia’s outback, been lost in Cambodian jungles, and hiked a good part of the Andes. He is anything but boring.
