Description
This week South African soccer legend Neil 'Mokoko' Tovey officially left his position as South African Football Association's (SAFA) Technical Director. The National Soccer League (NSL)’s all-time leader in appearances will not be extending his contract, and will be heading home after 5 years in the post. There had been conflicting reports as to why he hasn’t extended, with SAFA spokesperson Dominic Chimhavi blaming Tovey’s health issues. Tovey has now cleared the air on SL Radio’s podcast, 'The Big Interview'. In his interview, Tovey stated, “I had a five-year contract with SAFA [from] 2015 which ended [at the] end of June. SAFA did offer me a new contract but I felt that it was now time, I’ve been away from my family for five years, it’s now time to come back home and start a new chapter in my life.” He also cleared the air regarding the rumoured financial issues at South Africa's football governing body, explaining, “Yes we all do know SAFA has some really, really tough times ahead with regards to their finances, but they were very very good to me, they’ve always been good to me and so I’d like to thank SAFA for that.”
