“As the first of Public Radio Alliance’s faux-documentary podcasts the Black Tapes sets the template adopted for subsequent hits like ‘Tanis’ and ‘Rabbits’.
The podcast’s three series follow investigative reporter and sock enthusiast Alex Reagan as she tries to make sense of a cache of VHS tapes held by the mysterious Strand Institute which seem to offer evidence of paranormal activity. As the show progresses, it cleverly draws together a series of ostensibly separate stories into one well-crafted unifying narrative that rewards attentive listening.
Some listeners may by irritated by the slightly too frequent advertisements for increasingly arcane products and services most of which have limited utility for those outside the contiguous United States. But for others the ads’ delivery by the show’s hosts adds to the atmosphere and helps keep the lines between reality and fiction enticingly ambiguous.
Not quite as taut as subsequent PRA offerings like Rabbits, but compelling atmosphere, great production values, and a strong lead performance make for an addictive piece of contemporary mystery fiction.”
