En bovenal, hoe is het mogelijk dat de zussen ondanks het feit dat ze vrouwen waren in een mannenwereld, ondanks de erbarmelijke omstandigheden waarin ze moesten overleven, toch in staat geweest zijn om boven de middelmaat uit te stijgen en ons die prachtige boeken na te laten? Voor Charlotte Brontë was het niet eens een keuze: ze kon niet anders. Dat blijkt al uit een opstel dat ze voor haar leraar Monsieur Heger schreef, toen ze hier in Brussel in een pensionaat zat. Throughout all my youth the difference which existed between me and most of the people who surrounded me, was an embarrassing enigma to me which I did not know how to resolve; I thought myself inferior to everyone and it distressed me.
