“It’s ironic that The Columbo Confab is the third Columbo podcast I’ve come across, as it was a special April Fool’s edition of The TARDIS Tavern (where Sean and Steve reviewed “The Bye-Bye Sky-High I.Q. Murder Case”) that prompted me to seek out a podcast on the iconic detective in the first place.
So far, this podcast is definitely not as stylized with regard to its format as its two predecessors (or The TARDIS Tavern). As with The Columbo Podcast, one of the hosts is a longtime fan while the other is a relative novitiate to the altar of the rumbled raincoat. Even stacked against the tangent-prone Just One More Thing podcast, Sean and Steve’s discussions are rather free-wheeling, and some of what they bring up I’ve already heard discussed elsewhere. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it’s still interesting to hear the perspective of two more fans on the Columbo series.
Five episodes in, the hosts are still trying to establish a rhythm, with mixed results. The “Étude in Black” discussion, for example, displayed a tad more background on the episode, as well as an attempt at a comedic thread, resulting in a longer podcast than the four previous episodes, but not necessarily a better one since most of the information was things I already knew and the “trivia” about composers seemed almost random.
I enjoyed Sean and Steve’s Columbo discussion on their other podcast, and I look forward to their future discussions of episodes on The Columbo Confab. It may lack the frills of previous Columbo podcasts, but the hosts’ enthusiasm for the series already makes for a lively and entertaining listen.”
