5: Yoga and Spiritual Activism Part 1: The Yama
Listen now
Description
Yoga is so much more than asana (physical postures) despite that being what most people in the western world associate with yoga. In the Yoga Sutras, one of the ancient, foundational texts that yoga is based on, Patanjali describes an 8-limbed path of yoga, of which asana is only one limb. In this first episode of our series on how yogic philosophy relates to spiritual activism, Lynsey will introduce us to the first limb of the 8-limbed path - the yama. The yama can be defined as moral retraints - they are ethical codes for us to live by. As the first limb of yoga, the yama is given the most importance. It is the first limb that students are taught, often as children.   The yama are:  Ahimsa (non-violence)Satya (truthfulness)Asteya (non-stealing)Brahmacharya (moderation) Aparigraha (non-hoarding).  In this episode, Lynsey explains each of the yama in turn and then moves on to discuss her reflections on how each can be applied in the sense of spiritual activism. If you have ever felt a well of passion to take action to resist oppression and create a fairer and more just world, but you have somehow felt like this is not spiritual or on line with yogic values, this episode is for you With love and power, Natalia & Lynsey Thank you for being a part of our community!
