The Everyday Jiu-Jitsu Podcast Ep 49: Refereeing For Beginners
Listen now
Description
In this episode, I discuss refereeing for beginners. Learning how to ref is a very good way to gain a better understanding of the game, as well as becoming a more effective coach and competitor. The role of the referee is incredibly important in Jiu-Jitsu competition, and should absolutely be done to the best of one’s ability. This position requires knowledge, humility, patience, stress management, and the ref’s undivided attention. The referee should never steal the show in a grappling match; a competition is about the expression of the two athletes competing against each other. However, one mistake on the part of the referee can completely change the outcome of a match. I discuss my reasons for being a referee, refereeing kid’s matches, fairness of outcome, tips, and tricks, and becoming the ref that every competitor wants calling their matches.
