Description
Annabel Abbs is an award winning author whose fiction and non-fiction has been translated into over 15 languages. Her recent book "Windswept - Walking in the Footsteps of Remarkable Women" is a part wild walk, part memoir that follows Annabel's own walking experiences, interwoven with the stories of six incredible women whose lives were partly defined by their love of walking too.  Annabel decided to write the book when searching for stories of other women who walked and finding that they were missing from a predominantly male genre of writing. She set out on a mission to raise the visibility of these women and the role that walking has played for women throughout history as well as the many visible and invisible barriers they have encountered. In this episode, Annabel shares more about her motivation for writing the book and her own relationship with walking and the outdoors. We talk about the challenges that these women - and women in general - face when seeking to undertake an activity outside of that which is considered acceptable and explore the very relevant issues around safety when walking alone. We also discuss the very many benefits that walking can bring and the difference that this has made to Annabel's own story as well.
