“As a member of the church, I recently happened across the gospel topics essays and discovered for the first time in 36 years that there was more than one first vision account. That shook my world. I was hopeful that the church’s explanation would be more helpful but instead, it feels heavily apologetic and biased. About 5 years ago, I had a profoundly spiritual experience that I treasure deeply. As I’ve communicated that experience to different people over time, every tiny detail of that experience is crystal clear as if it was yesterday. It is absurd to me to think that if my experience included a visitation from God himself, that my retelling of that experience would vary as dramatically as Joseph Smith’s accounts do. I would write down every detail the second it happened and my story would be repeated word for word every time I told it because it would be burned in my memory forever. It seems far more likely that his story changed over the years as it was convenient to support his claims of restoring God’s one and only true church. Too many mental gymnastics in this explanation.”
