While IIoT protocols play a crucial role in communicating information from one industrial system to the next, the full value of IIoT can only be realised by standardising the vocabulary with which this information is communicated. The MTConnect Standard offers such a semantic vocabulary for manufacturing equipment like Machine Tool Controllers, Robotic Arms, CNC Machines, etc. And more importantly, it integrates with other communication standards.  To understand how MTConnect works and its role in Industrial IoT, I had a conversation with Russell Waddell who is the Managing Director at the MTConnect Institute and is responsible for day-to-day business operations and standards development activity.
