“Praia: The body electric: Katie Silcox
I took this class in a way that a longtime atheist might go to church with a pastor that has studied the bible. Although I have heard people talk about this internal energy, I had considered it a bit of hocus pocus for most of my time doing yoga, and ignored little signs that this electric body existed. I have had one teacher that was able to ignite something in me through a yoga assist that made me curious and wanting to know more. Katie first explained the system and the way our spirit can ignite this internal energy. It might sound to someone that hadn’t practiced before as the same hocus pocus. However, within several minutes of practicing with her, I started to feel something that is very hard to describe into words. Her cues for breathing and connecting imaginary lines inside our body took me into a different state. It was a very primal, tribal, and internal experience. At moments it was even sexual, but in a beautiful and different way, that didn’t need the energy, sight or touch of another person to engage. Although her classes are mostly geared towards women, into the practice I really felt powerful and it came from a part of my body that I have truly never focused on and ignited. It was Planet of the Apes stuff! Katie undoubtedly has a gift, that can give people tools to dig deep into another realm of their body that they were unaware of. I am so glad she has devoted her life to sharing it with people, and look forward to learning more.
I also took her Aryuveda class, which was a totally different experience. It was a very basic, informative and easy way for us to incorporate Aryuvedic principles into our own lives. She has a story telling side of her that was fun and childlike to listen to, explaining the old hindi beliefs on creation of the world. She brought essential oils, and gifted us with an engaging mediation with the different scents, taste, and feeling. The problem with this class is that it also leaves me yearning for more, and I again purchased another book that I want to chew on. I left with the tools to be able to explain a few aryuvedic principles to students in a limited time frame. A huge subject, very complicated, broken down into 30 seconds. Bravo!
