Mike’s implicit bias against police is showing…
Re. February 4, 2023 episode, interview from August 2020 with Dr. Ray. Mike and Dr. Ray reference the Jacob Blake shooting a few times, and Mike asks if there is any way to see it other than as an unjustified shooting. Dr. Ray says that, “the simple answer is no.” Dr. Ray is simply wrong, based on what we know now, and his (and Mike’s) implicit bias against police led them to the assumption that the police officers actions were unlawful. Blake was in violation of a court order, had assaulted his girlfriend, stolen her car and was abducting her kids (they were also his kids, but he had a no contact order because of a history of domestic violence). Blake fought with police, resisted arrest, was trying to flee with the kids, had a knife in his hand and was turning towards the police officer. It was justified shooting to stop the threat Blake posed. I was hoping that Mike would add a note at the end explaining that he and Dr. Ray made their comments based on the limited information they had available to them at the time. He could have used it as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of having as much relevant information as possible when making decisions about complex situations. But, alas, Mike would rather leave listeners with the impression that the Blake shooting was just another example of unjustified police brutality against black people. Shameful.

This show does not deserve three stars nor will I give it three stars ironically. Five stars, emphatically.
