Salvation by Grace Through Faith
Listen now
Description
The Apostle Paul so beautifully said, "By grace are you saved through faith," Ephesians 2:8. Welcome today to our study of salvation by grace, by the grace of God, through faith. We hope that you'll get your Bible, and have it with you, as we're going to look to the Word of God. Sometimes people think of these as forces, religious forces that are kind of diametrically opposed. It's either by grace or by faith, not both. The Bible teaches man is saved by grace through faith. They are not opposed to each other. Grace and faith go hand in hand in salvation. We want to think about the significance of both grace and faith. When you think about grace, maybe grace is one of those words that you've heard a lot, but you're not really sure exactly what it means. Grace is really favor. It's someone being pleased with. We often refer to it as God's unmerited favor- meaning that although we haven't earned it or deserved it, you, when you've done all those things which are commanded you, say, ‘I'm an unprofitable servant, I've only done that which is my duty to do.’ I've not earned it or deserved it, but God took favor on me. God wanted to save me. Not anything I did; God made His grace available because of who He is. Someone once defined grace in an acrostic way, it's God's Riches at Christ's Expense. That's a good way of thinking about grace. The word faith is another big religious word that sometimes we don't think a whole lot about what it really means. Faith is not just, ‘Okay, I believe; I accept this fact as true. That's not biblical faith. That's demonic faith. James 2:19 says the demons believe in God and tremble. Just accepting a fact as true is not biblical faith. ‘By faith, the walls of Jericho came down. By faith, Abraham did this or that.’ Every time you read of faith, it's involved with taking what I believe, not just believing it, but putting that belief into action. Faith is obedient trust. Not just trusting and believing- it's obedient trust. Romans 1:6, Romans 16:26, says ‘it's the obedience of faith that pleases God.’ Grace is God's undeserved favor. Faith is our obedient trust in almighty God. Now, how do both of those ideas work together in salvation? As we think about salvation by grace through faith, let's talk for just a moment about some false teachings that are out there about grace and about faith. Sometimes people look at grace as a license to sin. It may not necessarily be inferred by their speech, but it's definitely seen by people's actions. There are people who claim to be Christians, and they go out and talk in an ungodly way. They'll go out and do things that are immoral and ungodly, and then they come back and everything's okay on Sunday. Well, friend, while someone may not say, "Grace is a license to sin," their lifestyle kind of illustrates that idea. The Bible clearly teaches Christians, because they're under the grace of God, should still fight every day to keep sin out of their life, and not make light of sin. Here's what Paul said. Romans 6:1, Paul said, ‘Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?’ Oh, we've been given God's grace. Grace is given to save us from sin. Grace is the antidote to sin. Does that mean that the more we sin, the more grace we're going to get, so we just sin it up, so we can get more grace? No. ‘Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?’ God forbid is the idea. When I become a Christian, I want to do my best to live a life free of sin, because grace is not a license to go out and sin. Secondly, let's do away with the false idea, as well, that sometimes comes up, that grace alone saves us. Now listen again to Ephesians 2:8. We are saved by grace through faith. The Bible does not teach that we're saved by grace alone, and the Bible does not teach that we're saved by faith alone. Both play an intricate part in man's salvation. Now, for someone t
