Interesting, entertaining and thought provoking.
Head Ballet is a rare and beautiful thing - an expert and enthusiast, Paul Abbott, talking knowledgeably with wit and humour about very specific instances of popular culture - novelty records - and setting them in a context. Each episode features a guest whose knowledge of the record in question is brought out by Paul in a friendly conversational style. Somehow, by going from the specific piece of music and exploring its origins, influences and production, Paul and his guests manage to illuminate the history of the past century and a half in full aural technicolour. I came across this by a very circuitous route via Paul’s Brother Gary Abbott’s podcast on the Beatles: The Big Beatles Sort Out which Paul co-presents:- also really worth a listen if you have any interest in the Beatles’ music at all.

I’ve listened to the first few of these, covering a wide range of music with just the right balance of knowledgeable analysis with a light tone. A really great idea for a podcast and on the evidence so far, a success.
