Valuable summations of complex events
Much of Congolese history is new for me, as my one previous excursion had been reading “King Leopold’s Ghost.” As an introductory series that invites further study, it’s difficult to imagine anything better than Mr. Teddington’s lucid and sympathetic narrative. I appreciate most his effort to wrestle the sequence of events into a structure that centers the Congolese people (and also at times the pitiable slaughtered elephants) back from the inevitable familiarity his audience will have with the descriptions of events as told by those outsiders who continue to lust for Congo’s resources instead, for whom the people are a means to their own greedy ends, or subject to their prejudgments. Having just spent the first week of much more expected time in DRC, I am grateful to the podcast and looking forward to hearing season 4.
