“...(and how could you not be?), I’m positive you’ll be as thrilled to discover The Important Cinema Club as I was. I found it just a couple weeks ago (followed Will Sloan, Michael Moore impersonator extraordinaire, from the fun/cringey Michael and Us podcast), and I’ve been binge-listening ever since. They respect their listeners’ intelligence and discuss all manner of film, from kitschy to avant-garde, lowbrow to highbrow, that nearly all the other film podcasts overlook. Refreshingly, the two hosts have different tastes and personalities, but they’re both very smart and funny, and their real love of cinema is palpable and contagious. In addition to spotlighting and analyzing a variety of classic, foreign, and lesser-known/“challenging” films, they devote shows to auteur and provocateur directors and brilliant cinematographers and film reviewers. But they’ll also dive into the work of B movie directors with the same zeal. All of this is not to say that they totally ignore more mainstream/popcorn fare, but they’ll look at the oeuvre of, say, Ron Howard with a more critical eye. Instead of dismissing it entirely, they’ll examine what makes bad movies bad and milquetoast movies milquetoast.
Okay, I just finished listening to back-to-back episodes about two favorites, Buñuel and John Waters, and as I’m wont to do with things I’m excited about, I’ve started blathering. I promise you’ll enjoy this podcast, and you should subscribe immediately.”
