“Warhammer 40k is a very dark, very violent, very far flung futuristic setting. It has analogous themes to human history, as it is created by humans, and features humans. The hosts too are human. I found the podcast extraordinarily difficult to listen despite my desire to learn about the very detailed lore of Warhammer. It was difficult because while the hosts surely have knowledge and ardor for the game, they are unable to restrain their most pernicious impulses while talking about the lore. I didn’t make it past the 6th episode, and there are more than 30. Frequently throughout the podcast the hosts express their inherent racism and misogyny. They immediately laugh off nearly every malign comment showing their awareness that the opinions they express are not appropriate, and find that laughable. Early on they are asked about the game itself and are immediately moved to announce that the player of a certain faction of the game has no tactical skill and should give up the game. Textbook gatekeeping. Being that the game itself is dark and violent, it perhaps lends itself to predispositions of the same ilk. I however am interested in the lore and am able to separate current politics from fictional ones without trouble. This leads me to the conclusion that the hosts are already disposed to violent, racist, sexist impulses, and warhammer gives them vent to those impulses. However, a podcast of them spewing deleterious epithets while basically reading from a webpage devoted to the lore that everyone can access is the epitome of “neckbeard” a label they can never successfully dodge. Avoid.”
