“I have just caught up today with ‘The King’s Challenge’, which was reasonably interesting, however John Sopel (I think he was speaking at the time) made a serious error when talking about the issue of Scottish independence, saying that ‘he won’t want to be the monarch who loses his kingdom’. This is absolute nonsense, and displays alarming lack of appreciation of the history of the UK. The Union of the Crowns took place when James VI of Scotland acceded to the throne of England, and from then until 1707, when the Union of the Parliaments took place, Scotland and England were separate kingdoms with one monarch. If/when Scotland regains its independence, the constitutional situation, at least in the short term, will revert to that state, i.e. Charles will still be King of Scotland, as well as of England.”
