“I was really excited to see this podcast but very disappointed by the wrong copyright information being presented. A quilt design cannot be copyrighted because quilts are useful items, which copyright laws in the U.S. don’t protect. Ex. toys and wall hangings are copyrightable, clothes are not. The written expression of the design, e.g. the pattern is protected, however there is no law in the U.S. that allows designers to prevent quilters from making as many quilts as they want and selling them. Finally it is a common misconception that licensed fabric is licensed to sewer. It is not, it is licensed by the company (ex. Disney) to the manufacturers who will be printing the fabric with the licensed characters.
For more information this website is extensive, thoroughly researched and cites precedent setting court cases as proof.”
