“I could not believe what I heard just in the trailer to this. I felt cold and got goosebumps. I cannot imagine how painful this was for these women. I cannot imagine how someone, anyone but especially another female medical professional could do this to these women, nor can I imagine how horrific it was to experience the gaslighting and dismissive attitudes from everyone after this had happened. Just an all round horrible thing.
I was a professional equestrian since I was 18. I am now 44. But when I was in my early 30’s I repeatedly went to my family dr describing my pain in my back and legs (sciatica but I didn’t know that at the time) and repeatedly I was dismissed and told that I should be fitter or it wasn’t that bad or was I sure.
So I left thinking I was too fat or maybe it was just in my head and I was being hysterical.
This was a dr I had known since I was 8. I had never come to him wanting drugs or with fake illnesses. And I’m sorry bro but I can ride 10-12 horses a day, how many can you ride?
It wasn’t until I demanded an MRI from his replacement after retirement that I was even given consideration.
I have seen the neurosurgeon, been approved by the spinal board and am currently awaiting surgery. I feel if I was a man I would have been taken much more seriously.
I am so sorry that this happened to these ladies.
A great podcast and will look for more from Serial and Susan Burton.”
