Description
John Duffy and Ray Nowosielski joined me for a conversation based on their book, The Watchdogs Didn't Bark, published by Skyhorse. It comes with advance praise from John Kiriakou, the former CIA officer imprisoned after acknowledging the agency's torture programme, and from the documentary film-maker Alex Gibney. In this discussion, which was rocorded on the anniversary of the Cole bombing, we talked about: the significance of that bombing in relation to the CIA's withholding of critical information relating to two accused 9/11 hijackers; how much has been accident and how much has been concerted regarding the failures of journalism after 9/11; what makes a media narrative; how Duffy and Nowosielski publicly named CIA officers who've done wrong, and were threatened with prosecution for it; scrutinising the NSA's performance, which previously been a closed book; the contrasting fates of whistleblowers and power players; the importance of accountability; and why Donald Trump is a passing cloud, while there is much still to learn about important stuff.
