ABC’s Today Tonight?
I use to enjoy this show and find its analysis of current news and politics refreshing and insightful, but I’ve found that it is increasingly under-selling itself by giving too much attention to cheap topics that pander to audiences’ easy-to-access fear and frustration: insurance, banking, cost-of-living, Trump, etc. There is nothing inherently wrong with these topics, but the show tends to address them in a slightly tedious way akin to something I’d expect from au audio version of Today Tonight. The presenter also puts an unusual amount of personal experience and feeling into their delivery and interviews. Again, there is nothing inherently wrong with this, but it’s not appropriate for an objective news and analysis program (and more appropriate for a podcast or opinion piece). Maybe I should be listening to something like the 7am podcast instead, but I thought something closer to that would be more appropriate for the usual ABC audience in its News Daily show. The ABC’s ‘This Week’ was a good example of the tone and sophistication of analysis that I would like to see in a daily show.
