A revision project for a Year 3 remedial class
The Teacher’s Pet tells an interesting story and Hedley Thomas has done a great job of digging down into the truth of it. Indeed, in the right hands, this could have been a gripping podcast series. Unfortunately, Thomas and his colleagues at “The Australian” assume that their listeners are complete idiots, too stupid to remember anything for 10 minutes, let alone from one episode to another. Every fact, every opinion, gets repeated ad infinitum (often in exactly the same words) to the point where much of the time you know what Thomas is going to say before he says it. He is constantly guiding the audience as to what to think and feel, as if it is too stupid and lacks sufficient moral perspective to make up its own mind. I personally find Thomas’ delivery dull and not at all engaging, but I’m sure others will disagree. What isn’t in dispute is the astonishingly low opinion that Thomas has of his listeners. And it’s this that turns, what could have been a riveting 6 part series, into 16 rambling episodes that, collectively, feel like an extended revision project for a Year 3 remedial class.

I’ve only listened to 1 episode, but I’m hooked. I’m along for the ride for the whole series.

Lots of people having a say about things they heard, too much hearsay. The few facts are very disturbing but those facts are few. Also...Read full review »
