Great character takes
I’ve only heard one other Halt and Catch Fire podcast and I like how this one really goes into the depth of the characters and also analyses the ambiguity of some scenes in great depth. They have a really good hold of the characters thought process without just being overly critical of them from a writing standpoint which I really appreciate because when you take this show as a whole from season 1-4 the main cast is very well rounded and feel like really people. They are a little tough on Gordon but boy does Gordon season 1 need to work on himself haha. They also address the weird out of place Joe beat down early on which really is the only major out of character thing where it’s a big writing misstep. My only criticism is I wish they would have a spoiler section or talk about the show in a way where they know what happens because they watched it before but that can also just happen in future episodes too anyway, like episode 11 here. I also wish they would go over some of the tech trivia but the other HACF podcast I listened to also didn’t cover this a whole lot. It’s kind of hard to wrap up some of the influences and inspiration for some of the stuff in the show all in one place without checking old forums and reddit threads and piecing little bits together but the show is surprisingly accurate considering how much people try to pretend it’s so anachronistic. I think there’s a fair amount of people who also still don’t know Cardiff is based on Compaq. But this is my own selfish wants so I don’t put it past anyone. I’m always craving for bits of Trivia in my life. Anyway The Thing That Gets You to the Thing will give you some really analytical looks into the hearts of these characters that you will come to love before the show is over. This podcast is as good for first time viewers as much as repeat viewers.

I don’t like long podcasts, but this show didn’t feel long at all! The content wizzes by. It is relatable, clear, and well presented

A delicious dissecting of this wonderful, yet lesser-known series, ostensibly charting the rise and fall and rise of a small computer company punching above its weight. But really, this is a story of intersecting and often clashing personalities, egos and ideas. Alex T and Alex G are eloquent,...Read full review »
