“Hi guys,
This secret involves fire, a US Consulate, and the Vatican. Here goes.
Two years ago, I spent a month in Rome doing an Italian immersion program. While I was there, I spent a day at the Vatican. I wasn’t sure if I’d need to bring my passport, since technically it’s a different country, so to be safe I brought it. Ever paranoid about pickpockets, I put it in an inner pocket of my purse.
I went to the Vatican, had a blast, and returned to my apartment. When I looked in my purse to take the passport out, I couldn’t find it! The terror! The horror! I had been pickpocketed! I called my parents to tell them. They were upset, but understanding.
The next day, I went to the US consulate before class to get a temporary passport.
But Reviewer, you may ask, where’s the secret? This just sounds like a fairly common travel mishap. Well, Try Guys, here it is.
After class that day, I was demonstrating to a friend how I had looked in every single pocket of my purse multiple times, when my hand touched something in a small, zippered pocket.
My passport had been in there the entire time.
Did I tell my parents? Hell no. I had gotten them freaked out and wasted money getting a new passport.
So I grabbed the lighter for my gas stove and burned the old “lost” passport in the sink. It took a while—those things are built to last. As I watched the green fire slowly eat away at the picture of my face, I wish I could say I felt guilty. But I didn’t.
There you have it. I’ve lied to my parents about my passport for two years, and I set fire to a US government document.
PS hi Zach, I’m writing this from Scarsdale!”
