Through this presentation, I will explore the unique challenges and opportunities of creative and pedagogical practices located and developed in public, and facilitated through shared authorship and production. Bio: Andres L. Hernandez is a Chicago-based artist, designer and educator who re-imagines the environments we inhabit. Through collaborative, community-based work with youth and adults, and independent, studio-based practice, he explores the potential of spaces for public dialogue, community building, and social action. Hernandez is associate professor of art education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, co-founder of Revival Arts Collective, and founder/director of the Urban Vacancy Research Initiative. He currently serves on the exhibition design team for the Obama Presidential Center, and collaborates with artist Amanda Williams on A Way, Away (Listen While I Say), a design-build commission organized by the Pulitzer Arts Foundation and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. Hernandez and Williams were recently selected as exhibitors for the United States Pavilion at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale.
