“this is an incredible and clearly deeply-researched show. the writing, voice acting, soundscaping, pacing — all amazing, and the ending of season 5 felt gratifying and thematically cohesive. listening to it i experienced moments of real, genuine terror as well as heartfelt connection to the characters, and to their relationships with each other. i don’t want to spoil anything, but the friendship between two of the main characters in seasons 3-5 consistently delighted me in how realistic but also how touching it was, and it was so refreshing to see such a wonderful platonic relationship highlighted like this.
i did also experience the same language difficulties with season 3 as some other reviewers — the unexpected change from mostly or completely translated dialogue in seasons 1-2 to only partially translated in season 3 was jarring and honestly made me feel a bit stupid for needing translations that just didn’t come. i am a speaker of a minority language of patagonia, so it’s not like i don’t appreciate the inclusion of such a diverse cast in terms of cultures, linguistics and accents — but practically, as someone who doesn’t speak much spanish (especially at the pace and to the level the characters were speaking) i did struggle to follow the new plot for several episodes — especially after anticipating the same level of translation as the first and second season.
however, from season 4 onwards i didn’t find this so much of an issue, and overall this production was so fantastic, head and shoulders above some other productions i’ve listened to, that i don’t want to deduct anything from the rating. i would urge anyone considering listening to this to give it a try. this really is an incredible show”
