“I tried to listen to about a half dozen other real play DND podcasts. I quit each one anywhere from 3-5 episodes in. Maybe there was a cringy player or two, an impatient DM, or overproduction (ambient background noise or sound effects added in post). This podcast is different.
Pros:
The DM is passionate about the world building and storytelling. He gives the players freedom to shape their destinies, but also keeps them on track. He creates entertaining NPCs and does the best job of any DM I’ve heard on a podcast RPing interactions with the players.
The players aren’t murderhobos (as of the end of Season 3)
The story unfolds evenly and always feels like it’s moving forward. It feels like every encounter is of consequence. As in any well told story, there are serious moments that the DM and players treat with reverence, but there are also plenty of humor. I had some bigger laughs listening to This is Gonna Hurt than some comedy DND real play podcasts.
Back to the players. They do such a good job of living inside the heads of their characters and give them depth and range. Did I mention they aren’t murderhobos?
Cons:
After binging 132 episodes in 50 days, I have to wait for more.
There was also like one session that had postproduction ambient background noise like a bustling pub or busy market.”
