US relations with Iran
As a not well-informed college graduate, I briefly shared a room in Moscow, ID, with an Iranian student as I started a summer job with the US Forest Service. His first words with me were to tell me how much he hated our country. My only thought was to wonder why he came here to study. Fortunately, I restrained that response, and asked why he felt that way about us. He told me what you told us this morning, how our CIA’s actions brought down a legitimately elected government and put the Shah and his repressive secret police in place to torture the Iranian people. That brief exposure to history helped me to understand what happened a decade later during the Carter Administration. Lacking this background has kept Americans from understanding how our government’s action in the past continues to produce animosity today. Even our current leaders act without this background.
