“Sizzle Town is possibly the most original podcast since My Father Wrote a Porno. Trust Tony Martin to come up with a late night phone in podcast as the premise for, a podcast.
In a podcast sea of true crime, riffing on a story or endless interview podcasts, it shows what podcasting can achieve. Australia no longer has the sort of radio comedy and drama that the UK still produces. Perhaps creative and novel podcasts like this is how we will enjoy the new radio.
Martin’s previous podcast, Childproof was engaging and funny. However it suffered from being originally written for TV. It was then repurposed as a live podcast recording. To cover for the lack of a camera Tony wrote in a narrator to set scenes and maintain continuity. Sizzle town is fully conceived as a podcast and it works well.
Regular callers to the podcast, including Mr Martin’s cat, set a structure for the show, as does the running gag that only 3 sound effects are available for each podcast. Certainly a call out to the five names read at the end of the Little Dum Dum Club episode.”
