“For two self-proclaimed idiots, these hosts are comedic GENIUSES. This is a brilliant premise for a podcast and Lianna and Siena pull it off so well — I literally listened to the first six episodes for hours straight, without pausing a single time.
Some of these movies I haven’t seen (and won’t! Looking at you, Raging Bull). Some I have seen, some I even love (ok, that’s just Singin’ in the Rain). And I still loved that episode! I learned some new things (horrifying, racist things! Our faves are not infallible!) and have a deeper, broader understanding of the work. It’s like I do this weird thing where I’m able to hold space for my own opinions while listening to people I disagree with, idk.
This show is really well crafted, with thoughtful segments — “how to pretend you’ve seen this movie” is downright inspired, the predictions are hilarious, and I unironically get a lot out of the well-researched yet concise historical context!
At the heart of it, Lianna and Siena are charming and hysterical hosts. They have distinct viewpoints (Siena likes some parts of these movies in spite of herself! Lianna likes George MacKay! and I LOVE a running joke) and they also have an effortless style of banter that makes you feel in on the joke that’s being told on one of their couches. So much of Film Discourse is so ~~~gatekeepy~~ and this is a much-needed antidote to that.
I’m so glad this show exists!! I’m already frantically trying to think of what they can do when they finish this list of 100, because I don’t want this show to end. (And to everyone mad about them “giggling” — I’m so sorry you’ve never made a woman laugh before. That’s gotta be tough.)”
