“They don’t seem to grasp any nuance in the films. They don’t know much about film history, and that’s okay, but they also don’t know much about actual history. They review American Graffiti and they are puzzled about how the teens all have cars. They are puzzled about a female character that is turned on by cars. There are woman that are into cars and are turned on by cars. Go search Instagram. It’s crawling with them. They see the teacher having an affair with a student and just say “that so inappropriate.” That’s the point. It is inappropriate. The filmmaker isn’t including the scene and saying “this is alright”. He’s saying “this is one of the possible outcomes in life and it’s ugly and sad and pathetic.” The main character sees it and realizes he could become like that. It’s nuanced.”
