“The concept is cool, production quality is good and the host is likable. BUT there are two things holding the show back from being a solid 4 star podcast.
1) Overall the show is a celebration of GenX/Early Millennial nostalgia, so it is likely that the listener would pick an episode that covers a topic that they themselves have fond memories of. Usually the show delivers on that- EXCEPT when the host himself covers something he personally doesn’t have nostalgia for. In that case, he’ll spend the episode being negative about it, or saying “I don’t know, I don’t get it” and “It doesn’t make any sense.” over and over. It’s very irritating, and also brings me to my 2nd issue with the show…
2) There are Guests (and often reoccurring Guests) that can easily derail and ruin the show. Sometimes the host doesn’t have chemistry with the guest, or the guest themselves don’t have much to say, OR they don’t know when to shut up. It can range from mildly awkward and boring to excruciatingly painful. Tastes will vary of course, but there is one Reoccurring Guest that is insufferable and his presence is always an instant episode skip for me. I won’t name him, but he and Simpsons Comic Book Guy share alot in common. Smug, perpetually negative, pretentious, a little effeminate and alot overweight. Everything is “awful” and “terrible” with this guy. I get the impression that the host, who is generally light-hearted upbeat type personality, is tickled by his curmudgeonly Guest, finding his negativity to be humorous? Idk I’m just speculating. Either way, the dude ruins every episode he’s on and he’s on A LOT of episodes.
I started this review angrily intending to give it 1 Star, but that’s not really fair to the Host. The show is overall good and worth giving a chance. I just wish he’d stop having that F’ing neckbeard on.”
