Honest Review
First, I know how much work it is to make an audio drama (or “movie”, whatever) so 5 stars for that. There’s a lot to like here and there are some things to criticize. I think the glowing reviews are a little too nice and most of the negative reviews are overly critical so this is my attempt at an honest and balanced review. The idea is really cool. It’s worth listening to just for that reason. A good stretch for your imagination. The writing reminds me of Goosebumps. It’s not too shabby, but there are times when the dialogue feels a little forced and obvious. I’ve heard much worse and I’ve heard better. The acting was pretty good. I think the acting got better throughout the story, like the actors started to figure out their characters and catch their stride as they went. It makes the start difficult to get into but it gets better. My biggest complaint about the dialogue is that it sounds like it was recorded in rooms that weren’t sound treated to prevent natural reverb reflections. It blends in okay when the characters are indoors, other than being a little uneven between characters, but it gets really noticeable when the characters are in an outdoor scene. It shouldn’t sound like an 8x12 bedroom out in the woods... The sound design is really good. Good use of ambience, sound effects, foley, and reverb (not including the bad dialogue reflections in that critique, because it’s two different disciplines). The music is really good too. Good ambience tracks, and the theme song hooked me right away. Honestly that song impressed me enough to keep listening when I wasn’t sure if I should or not. That’s my objective review. Personally, I really can’t stand narration in audio drama. If there’s going to be narration, it might as well just be an audiobook. Don’t waste time casting characters and creating an immersive soundscape if you’re going to pull your listener out of it to give a play by play. That’s what novels do. At least the narration was the main character talking to the listener which is better than a “narrator” character, so it could have been worse, but it’s just a waste of good sound design. All things considered, I think this is a good addition to the audio drama world and I hope the creators continue creating. If there’s one thing the creators should focus on improving for their next endeavor, it’s recording the dialogue dry. Coat your walls with foam, record in a closet, or even put a blanket over your actor and the mic if you have to. Do whatever it takes to clean that up and your production value will double in my opinion. And for me personally, please skip the narration next time! Trust your sound designer and composer to paint the picture. After all, it’s a “movie” right? Show, don’t tell. Good job guys, keep it up!

More reviews of Treat
To the writer: Basic cornerstone: There are no “creeks” In Massachusetts and nothing ever dries up. So right off the bat your research is terrible. Better luck next time.
