“As a survivor of institutional abuse at a boarding school run by an extreme Christian cult, I am shocked and dismayed at the prevalence of abusive programs that still exist for so called “troubled teens”.
I am 50 now and I’ve required decades of therapy, meds (which made things worse) and countless support programs to help me process the trauma I endured growing up. These institutions are extremely damaging and are completely unregulated, hiding their abusive practices behind religious freedoms.
I applaud the creators of this podcast. Knowing how courageous they have to be to wade into such triggering discussions and contentious battles. In my case, I am a representative plaintiff in a class action lawsuit we launched in Canada in 2007 against our institution the year it closed. I’m happy to say that 13 yrs later, we won the first round in the Supreme Court of Ontario. But the defence is appealing so the battle continues.
This is a fight worth waging! Countless children, teens and adults suffering decades later need courageous people to take action.”
