The Not so “Bloody” reign of Mary I
Congratulations Dr Stiffell on being awarded your PhD without amendments. Your research sets Queen Mary in her proper place as England’s first queen regnant, having survived the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune during her father’s lifetime. As an art historian I am particularly interested in your research of how Mary used her image to promote herself not only as queen of England, but also as queen of Spain and the Low Countries. Your research sets the precedent for how all the queens regnant of England should use imagery to promote their reigns ever since. We only have to look at the many portraits and photographs of the late Queen Elizabeth II to see how image is key in how a monarch remains in front of the public. In Mary I’s time the man in the street would have only known what the monarch looked like from the coins he had in his pocket. I look forward to being able to read your ‘catalogue raisonne’, especially since it is the first to bring to gather all the works of art, coins, medals, illuminated manuscripts, illuminated letters patents granted by her - and her husband, illuminated plea rolls in one place. Great interview giving us a fabulous insight into a queen that has been much maligned over the centuries.

This podcaster has found her groove! I’ve enjoyed the show from the beginning, but her confidence and quality have grown so much. I love the longer, more in-depth shows and especially love the interviews. Keep the fantastic work up!

As someone with ADHD I sometimes have a hard time understanding concepts, but this podcast explains everything really well and I learn something new about the Tudors, even when I thought I knew everything about them.
