“I have now enjoyed Catherine and Emily’s podcast through Circe twice, the second reading to assure that I had given full attention after taking extensive notes the first time.
I find the presentations to be scholarly and insightful yet approachable. Essayists and interviewees from a rich palate of cultures spice the stew, taking the experience up a degree.
My practice has been to read an episode while listening to the RTE Players podcast tha U22 recommends, then listen to the companion podcast Reading Ulysses with Fritz and Jerry, then top it off with Catherine et al.
My second U22 listening has been inspired by the (early!) delivery of the Cambridge addition of Joyce’s masterpiece, which any lover of the novel must find indispensable and delightful.
What did I do during the Pandemic? I read Ulysses, what did you do.
While I was reading Ulysses aloud with my wife last year, I discovered your podcast and was delighted to hear so many recommendations to read it aloud, advice that we enthusiastically endorse.
Like so many of your guests, I came to Ulysses by way of Portrait of the Artist, which I read in high school. I was 17 when the film version came out in Washington, DC; one had to be 17 or older and accompanied by an elder. My 16-year-old girlfriend and I were often baffled and embarrassed (we were both attending Catholic schools) but I loved it and viewed it again last year with relish. And like so many I had multiple failures and false starts with the novel before summiting.
Now we have been to Dublin and walked in Leopold’s and Stephen’s sidewalks and sand.
The experience inspired our dormant belonging to the old country; as several of your guests affirm, this is a welcoming door for the Diaspora to reunite with our unique and vital culture.
U22 is a welcoming and helpful resource that will enhance any reading of James Joyce’s monumental work.”
